Scoop Rake vs. Brush Rake: Which Excavator Attachment Do You Need?
Share

If you're outfitting an excavator for land clearing, site preparation, or vegetation management, rakes are one of the most versatile attachments you can add to your machine. But not all rakes work the same way and choosing the wrong type can cost you time and money on the job.
At Bully Dog Equipment, we offer two purpose-built excavator rake attachments: scoop rakes and brush rakes. Here's how they differ and how to pick the right one for your work.
What Is a Scoop Rake?
A scoop rake features a curved, pan-style profile with reinforced side plates and a solid floor. Think of it as a hybrid between a cleanup bucket and a rake – it collects and moves loose material while the tines allow fine debris, dirt, and small rocks to pass through.

Best for:
- Post-construction site cleanup
- Collecting loose debris, rocks, and light organic material
- Landscaping and grading tasks where you need controlled material handling
- Moving material into piles for loading
Our scoop rakes are available in two sizes:
- 42" Scoop Rake — for 4–6 ton excavators
- 48" Scoop Rake — for 6–10 ton and 10–13 ton excavators
All models are built from high-strength steel with wear-resistant edges and are compatible with a wide range of couplers including Caterpillar, John Deere, Kubota, Hitachi, Komatsu, Sany, Yanmar, and Bobcat X-Change.
What Is a Brush Rake?
A brush rake is built for heavier, more aggressive work. It features hardened, spaced tines that bite into dense undergrowth, root systems, and rocky terrain – letting soil pass through while capturing stumps, roots, branches, and rocks above.

Best for:
- Land clearing and forestry work
- Root and stump removal
- Right-of-way and utility corridor maintenance
- Separating debris from topsoil on rough terrain
Our brush rakes cover a wide range of machine sizes:
- 32" — for 1.5–2.5 ton excavators
- 36" — for 2.5–4 ton excavators
- 42"–48" — for 5–10 ton excavators
- 54" — for 12–16 ton excavators
- 72" — for 20–25 ton and 30–35 ton excavators
Whether you're running a compact mini excavator on a residential lot or a large machine on a commercial clearing project, there's a brush rake sized and rated for the job.
